Battle of the Sexes: Who Wins the Fashion War?

by Michelle Hutchinson

Who would have thought that the Lockhorns, that long-married, always-bickering, comic-strip couple, would be my inspiration for this week’s blog post?

But when I took one look at this panel…

I headed right to my keyboard.

If I wear pantyhose in the winter, my legs freeze; in the summer, these clingy garments make me sweat…or should I be ladylike and say perspire?

And getting them on is half the battle. Where’s the heel and where’s the toe? Will they get twisted by the time I get them up my calf or thigh? Will they run before I get the elastic band around my waist? Ugh!

My husband knows that anytime we have to attend a formal function, he’s going to hear me complain about pantyhose, and yet he always remarks, “At least you don’t have to wear a tie.” Doesn’t he get tired of hearing my at-least-you-can-loosen-a-tie-halfway-through-the-night-or-even-take-it-off response? I don’t think anyone would approve of a woman with bare legs at one of these events.

And what about Spanx? Why would I want to wear footless pantyhose and wind up with blisters from shoes rubbing directly against the skin of my feet? (No offense intended, Sara Blakely. I do admire the empire you’ve built.)

All I can say is, “Thanks for taking one for the team, Mrs. Lockhorn.”
