In the publishing industry, timing is everything. That’s what I recently learned during the book launch of author and Wordhelper client LeBron Matthews.

After going through the editing process, LeBron found a small, traditional, independent publisher, Deeds Publishing, who brought his book, Tides of War: A Novel of the American Civil War, to the market.

Six years ago, when LeBron started writing his manuscript, he didn’t know when he’d release his book, but 2014 turned out to be a good choice since it is the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. Many commemorative events are going on throughout the southeast and northeast, events to which LeBron can tie his book and gain a marketing edge.

Deeds Publishing wisely chose the date, location, and event venue for LeBron’s book launch.

Date: LeBron’s book was released on June 14, Flag Day and the 239th birthday of the U.S. Army. With patriotism and the army playing significant roles in Tides of War, having the book launch coincide with these observances created a marketing opportunity for LeBron to show his support of our veterans and active duty service members.

June 14 was also the day before Father’s Day, so people looking for last-minute gifts for their dads were eager to buy a copy of Tides of War.

Location: Scheduling the book launch in Columbus, Georgia, was a no-brainer, because the city is featured prominently throughout the story. Residents of Columbus bought the book to see how their city figured into the plot.

Event Venue: Every Saturday, Columbus hosts its uptown market days, an event that draws a big crowd, including soldiers from nearby Fort Benning. This was another wise marketing move, as many soldiers and veterans have an interest in historical fiction.

Are you getting ready to launch your book? If so, think about significant dates, locations, and events that you can use as marketing tie-ins.
